Bathinda: The Union minister of state for external affairs has said that 749 Indian students died in 49 foreign countries due to medical reasons, accidents, and suicides between 2021 and 2025. Another 27 students fell victim to violent attacks, with the highest concentration occurring in 2024 (16 deaths), mainly in Canada and the USA.
The information was given in response to a question by Rajya Sabha member Rajinder Gupta. The deaths rose from 81 in 2021 to 178 in 2025. The minister said 1,444 cases involving health, crime, discrimination, or visa issues were reported across 23 countries, plus 779 consolidated cases from France in the last five years.
The ministry emphasised that safeguarding students is a high priority, listing regular contact through the MADAD Portal, dedicated WhatsApp groups, and consular camps as key supports.
